Happy Rainy Wednesday!
We did it … shifted from in-person to remote learning! Our staff have worked really hard to support the wide range of learners. Everyone is on a steep learning curve and working together to make it all happen and it’s working. We have approx. 169 students, about 2/3rd's from winter quarter participating, with some classes having even more students than before.
One of our strengths as a learning organization is our ability to design programs to support learners where they are at, and we are providing a menu of options for adult learners to continue to develop their skills. Staff and volunteers have spent numerous hours just getting all our students access to learning programs. As an example, one student is in Conversation Class, ESOL 4/5 and Citizenship class. Staff and volunteers from all three classes reached out to her repeatedly in the first week of class – she started with only access to the Zoom class through audio on her phone and by the end of the week could access both audio and video, as well as speak in the class through her phone. Our first week of classes focused on the digital skills necessary for accessing content remotely, and we’ll move into teaching more content and other reading, writing, listening, speaking, and math skills as the quarter progresses.
Tutors and class assistants are setting up regular phone calls to support the class materials and to practice English. It is incredible how hard people are working and persevering to get our students online and receiving remote learning in one way or another.
